Turkey is a city full of adventurous places for a tourist to visit and enjoy. It not only includes spectacular architectural places to visit, but also a diversity of things to shop from, ranging from fresh dry fruits to hand woven carpets and rugs. Apart from cheap shopping and rich cuisine, Turkey offers you the chance to experience an interesting game known as Oil Wrestling in Turkish. This is a traditional sport played in Turkey, which has a long millennium history to itself. Oil Wrestling is tee national sport of Turkey. The country has many European and World champions. But the most interesting type of wrestling is Oil Wrestling in Kirkpinar, near Edirne. That sport is very traditional as it is practiced since the Ottoman Empire and have a history of more than 400 years. Kirkpinar, the annual “world series” of Turkish oil-wrestling, has been around since the 14th Century and the summer event that takes place in Edirne, Turkey, now holds a Guinness World Record for the longest running sports competition.Turkish oil wrestlers are supposed to have triangular backs, somewhat-fleshy midsections, and bulging biceps. Ali Gurbuz has 10 percent body fat, stands 6-feet-5-inches tall, and has comparatively thin arms. In terms of tradition, the two-time Kirkpinar Oil Wrestling Champion should have the physique of Dan Henderson. Instead, he looks more like an olive-skinned Alexander Gustafsson. A wrestler’s body is oiled with mixture of olive oil and water. The wrestler or “pehlivan” wears special trousers called “kisbet”. They are made of water buffalo hide or calfskin. The main goal of each wrestler is to effectively hold the kisbet of his opponent. This move, when properly performed, is called “paça kazık”. Depending on the category the fight lasts between 30 and 40 minutes. Unlike Olympic wrestling, oil wrestling matches may be won by achieving an effective hold of the kisbet. Thus, the pehlivan aims to control his opponent by putting his arm through the latter’s kisbet.
