अघोरपंथ में श्मशान साधना का विशेष महत्व है। अघोरी जानना चाहता है कि मौत और वैराग्य में क्या फर्क होता है। आत्मा मरने के बाद कहां जाती है? क्या आत्मा से बात करना संभव है? ऐसे ढेर सारे प्रश्न है जिसके कारण अघोरी श्मशान में निवास करना पसंद करते हैं। मान्यता है कि श्मशान में साधना करने से शीघ्र ही फल मिल जाता है। श्मशान में साधारण मानव साधारणतया जाता ही नहीं, इसीलिए साधना में विघ्न पड़ने का कोई प्रश्न नहीं।
